Along Came David

In the Bureau’s first video submission, Emmett Kerr-Perkinson follows Director David Hartstein during the premiere of his documentary Along Came Kinky… Texas Jewboy for Governor at the 2009 SXSW Film Festival.

Production Notes

I met David a few months after I moved to Austin. I started working as production manager on a feature he was producing, a comedy called The Happy Poet (it’s still in post). During the shoot, David was in post-production on his documentary Along Came Kinky… Texas Jewboy for Governor, which follows Kinky Friedman’s 2006 run for governor. If you don’t know who Kinky is, look him up on Wikipedia—singer, songwriter, novelist, humorist, politician, and so on. He’s definitely led an interesting life.

The documentary was accepted into this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival, and this video is about the movie’s premiere. I asked David if he’d be interested in my shooting a behind-the-scenes look at what the premiere was like from his perspective, and he liked the idea.

This was about two days before the screening, so we didn’t even think to get any official permission. The day of the premiere, my friend Jeffrey Buras and I mic’d David up and followed him around all day, shooting whatever we could.
